SERP recognizes that negative behaviors and attitudes are a result of negative social norms and gender discriminatory practices and changing the norms or creating new norms of social behavior is the key to improve the health and sanitation behaviors in the communities. The HD unit works on Health, Nutrition, Sanitation, Education and Gender issues pertaining to SHG women and try to improve HD indicators.

The quality of life has suffered due to various economic, social and cultural causes and also lack of dietary diversification for example micronutrient deficiency is common and causes impaired physical and cognitive development. It is required to have access to a perennial supply of vegetables and nutrition.

Gender activities have been initiated in early states of SERP. The Gender activities helps SHG women to monitor their social empowerment agenda along with financial agenda, increase their capacities in decision making at different levels, free mobility, having a say in local governance and building a safe environment. Active SHG members were identified as Social Action Committee (SAC) members and trained on various acts relating to women and children rights to support the rural community who faces domestic violence, child marriages, child abuse, child labour and other social issues.
